Will the REAL people please stand up?

I don’t know about you, but I’m so tired of fake. We live in a world where things can be fabricated easily. We have also become experts at faking almost anything – our looks, our online profiles, our life success, our confidence, even our lifestyles.

Recently, listening to an episode of TED Radio Hour, Guy Raz was tackling the topic of “What is Original” in his normal superb fashion. Listening to how there are no real original ideas or concepts was fascinating and an affirmation of what I’ve always said, that there is nothing new under the sun. (Yes, even I didn’t come up with that! Solomon did in Ecclesiastes 😉 )

But how about individual people? Every one of us is a true original.

In the world of fake, you are not a copy, you are not a replica, nor should you try to be. Click To Tweet

Being real is about being YOU and getting good at it. Not pretending to be something you’re not. This really points to the issue of pride vs. self-deprecation. If your mind went to “humility” you’re halfway there.

Humility is not putting yourself down or pretending to be less than you are – that’s self-deprecation. I have coached hundreds who suffer from that tendency (and resolved it!)

Pride is putting yourself above others and often building a false persona to support it. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of yourself. It’s how you communicate it and live it that matters. When you pretend to be better than you really are, that’s false pride and it’s annoying.

Humility is a true sense of self. It’s the mid point – the true north that we should all seek. Humility is being self aware and honest. Being real. I know who I am and I’m OK with that. I know what I’m good at, and will tell you. I also know what I’m not good at, and I don’t pretend to be good at it. I will accept it as a weakness and if it’s important, do the work to fix it. But I don’t hide it, nor do I let my weaknesses define me.

As Popeye says, “I yam what I yam, and that’s all that I yam!”

So how about you?  Where do you fall on the scale of pride vs humility vs self-deprecation?

Time to be REAL. Time to be YOU and claim it in every way. Be a champion for authenticity in everything you do and everything you are.
